The photography of Dave McKean

Photography, itself a novel process for making pictures when it was announced almost two hundred years ago, has perhaps been influenced the most by the revolution that has taken place in contemporary image making with the advances made in the power and sophistication of computer technology. From practically the very start there were always photographers who wished to use photography for more than the plain recording of reality and experimented with the optical and chemical processes of the medium to make unusual and unexpected pictures. In the late Twentieth century, with the scope the computer offered, creative image-makers had the means to take the photograph beyond what had been possible before and the horizons of photographic expression have been consequently expanded to – well, potentially, infinity! Dave Mckean, already master of the comic book medium, has been one of those image-makers who have embraced the combined power of the photograph and digital editing to explore what is possible and the images in this exhibition are some of his results.

The sources of his inspiration are as traditional as any artist might have – from childhood memories, through mature experiences and accumulated knowledge to metaphysical reflections – but the photographs are decidedly unique. With his extraordinary ability to express original ideas in pictorial form Mckean is a shaper of thoughts, a creator of worlds unseen and his work a portent of things to come.
