Perhaps no two writers in English better encapsulated the period of the 1940s than the Anglo-American Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) and the Englishman Graham Greene (1904-1991). Their moody novels captured much of that mid-twentieth century spirit embracing moral dilemma, cynicism, despair, loneliness and the uncoupling of the human soul from comfortable bourgeois ideals.
In Geoff Grandfield (b.1961) both writers have found a modern artist equal to the task of accompanying their work. In these award-winning illustrations to their novels Grandfield engages with the Great Wrong Places Chandler's hero Philip Marlowe visited and the tangled, unfocused, moral worlds of Good-or-Evil and Right-or-Wrong in Greene's work. From Los Angeles to embattled London during the blitz Grandfield has found the images to match the heavy atmospheric character of both writers.
Expressionistic techniques of composition and process are brought to the depiction and interpretation of the texts through metaphor and symbol. These illustrations are images to conjure with in the recreation of the worlds created by two of the twentieth century's great writers.
